Rugby Union was, in fact, the first sport to be played by the Club, with a game held on February 16th 1886 between civilians and the British Army garrison, then stationed in Hong Kong. That game was played on a pitch within the Happy Valley racetrack on Hong Kong Island where the Club is still located today. Since these simple beginnings, Hong Kong Football Club has always played a key role in the playing and organisation of rugby in Hong Kong, with many of Hong Kong's leading professionals and business people having played for the Club.

The heart of Hong Kong Football Club rugby is at home. With over 300 Members, the Section fields six 15-a-side Men's teams known as Club, Dragons, Scorpions, Select, Sequins and Bulls, an Over-35's side as well as one Ladies side called Ice. These teams compete in every local league and cup competition, often with a high degree of success, having been crowned Grand Champions of the league on many occasions. Selection for the teams begins every season with a trial match followed by a registration barbecue.

Several players have represented Hong Kong at both 7's and 15's this season as well as in the past and this is set to continue in the future.

Touring also plays a major part in the season calendar with playing tours by a team of mixed abilities known as HKFC Vandals, representing the Club throughout Asia and across the world in places that have included Australia, the US and Canada. These tours, along with several parties, barbecues and dinner events held throughout the year, make up a very lively social scene.

To maintain our status as one of the premier Clubs in Hong Kong Rugby the Section welcomes interest from active rugby players who are keen to contribute to both the competitive and social aspects of the Rugby Section.
